Berlinale: Outstanding Short Films

Often overlooked, but always worth seeing: Short Films from the Festival Line-up

Traditionally, short films are part of the overall programme of the Berlin International Film Festival: "The short films of the 'Berlinale Shorts'," says the festival. "shimmer in all colours, sound out boundaries and set new markers in the wide field of cinematic possibilities. They are a seismograph of the present. Berlinale Shorts is open to all genres, styles and content." Approximately 25 world premieres and international premieres are presented to a broad audience each year as part of the "Berlinale Shorts". Moderated film discussions promote dialogue between film and society, art and reality. Selected classics of the short form complement the programme and establish references between history and the present. The programme will be presented by Anna Henckel-Donnersmarck, director of the "Berlinale Shorts". A three-member, international and annually changing jury awards the "Golden" and the "Silver Bear" during the official award ceremony. In addition, the jury nominates the "Berlin Short Film Candidate for the European Film Awards". The "Golden Bear" entitles the winner to participate in the competition for the Short Film Oscar®. Our collection includes a "Berlinale Shorts" selection, including "Bear Awarded" short films.
